One of the more controversial films of 2012, Killer Joe, a return to form of sorts for director William Friedkin, has one of the most uncomfortable scenes in recent memory, featuring Matthew McConaughey in a role well-suited for him (a Texas cop who moonlights as a hitman), a half-naked Gina Gershon, Emile Hirsch and Thomas Haden Church playing white trash to a T and Juno Temple giving a sparkling performance in her supporting role as Dottie, the girl who keeps the story of a killing for insurance money scheme gone wrong all woven nicely together.

Good review. McConaughey has never been slimier, Hirsch has never been louder, Haden Church has never been dumber, Temple has never been more innocent, and Gershon has never really shown us ALL of her like we see here. Altogether, they make a pretty out-standing ensemble that makes this film tick a whole lot more than I expected.
I consider Juno Temple’s turn in “Killer Joe” to be the 2nd best performance by a supporting actress in 2012 (of the 150+ films I saw released last year), second only to Rosemarie DeWitt in “Your Sister’s Sister.”
